The latest in the racismists' attack on sanity is the allegation that LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling is a – gasp! – racist. This accusation is based on an audio (leaked to the press by a woman who is the defendant in a lawsuit alleging that she embezzled almost $2 million dollars from Sterling) of an argument between Mr. Sterling and his girlfriend over her having posted pictures of herself with Magic Johnson on Instagram. A transcript of what Mr. Sterling actually said follows.
"And I'm just saying that it's too bad you can't admire him privately. And during your ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE, your whole life, admire him – bring him here, feed him, fuck him, I don't care. You can do anything. But don't put him on an Instagram for the world to see so they have to call me. And don't bring him to my games. OK?"
Oh My God! Donald Sterling told his girlfriend not to bring Blacks to his games!
No he didn't, dummy. This was a lovers' spat, and Mr. Sterling is obviously reacting from jealousy, hurt, and – one might argue righteous – anger. He obviously doesn't mean everything he's saying in the heat of the moment – and I'm not referring to feeding Magic Johnson.
Suppose that Mr. Sterling had told Miss Stiviano during an argument that "There ain't no f***ing way you're binging a damn cat in this house. I'm allergic to the little buggers, OK? And don't even think about bringing one to any of my games." Who (aside from PETA) would find that even newsworthy, let alone damning?
Oh, and if you still buy into the racismists' lie that Mr. Sterling is racist, consider that Miss Stiviano – the woman he's considering as the mother of his children – is half Black and half Hispanic.
But suppose Mr. Sterling were a racist. What of it? Doesn't he have the right to be a racist just as he has a right to be a Democrat or a Freemason – or a queer? Jesse Jackson and Jeremiah Wright and Al Sharpton are professional racists. Why can't Donald Sterling be a private racist if he wants to be? Is this no longer a free country?
Overt racial crimes, such as playing knockout, ought to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But a man's personal beliefs ought to be his own – free from media kangaroo trials. We're breeding a generation of racismists – low information people who run around shouting, "Oh my God! Racism! Racism! Racism here! Racism there! (waving their arms in the air) Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah!"
Besides, prosecuting a man's beliefs in the press is a slippery slope. What next will we see declared illegal by the court of media manufactured opinion? Christianity? Chastity?
Oh wait –
