Since Woodrow Wilson, it has become popular to describe the United States as a democracy. Actually, of course, the United States was founded as a republic, and though it has evolved over the past hundred years into a democracy, that transition is hardly to be applauded. Contrary to Democratic propaganda, a democracy is not a stable political system. It is the second stage in the decline of a political system. The normal course of political evolution is a degeneration from republic to democracy to aristocracy to revolution.
All political systems start out as republics. In a republic, political power resides in the individual, and the continuity of the republic is invested in personal responsibility. A republic is founded on a bedrock of universally accepted principles, and each republican is committed to the preservation of those principles because those principles guarantee his own rights and his own freedom.
Once the republic allows the intrusion of democracy, however, the principles become blurred. Democracy shifts political responsibility from individuals to majorities, and majorities are always more interested in suppressing minorities to support their short term self indulgences than in preserving the universally accepted principles that assure their long term freedom and prosperity. Democracies are mobs, who reject the rule of law and form their own mercurial"laws" based on their current, mob-reinforced passions.
This hedonistic myopia, inherent in democracies, makes them easy prey for would-be aristocrats, who pander to their self-absorption by giving them republican-financed goodies in exchange for their rights and incite them with propaganda to trade their freedom for immediate self-gratification. "Let me give you food stamps (in exchange for your freedom of speech) and let me give you "free," – i.e. paid for by someone else – contraceptives (in exchange for your religious freedom)." If the republicans do not intervene, the aristocrats use the democrats to slowly erode the principles upon which the republic had been built until they are able to enslave both the democrats and the republicans.
But republicans do not take easily to slavery. They are not republicans because of their politics. Rather their politics is defined by their republicanism, and once the aristocrats impose slavery on them, the republicans revolt, overthrow the aristocracy, and form a new republic. This has been the cycle of political evolution since governments were invented.
The persistence of this cycle is due to the fact that there are three types of people in the world: republicans, democrats, and aristocrats. Republicans are individualists who value their independence, their personal integrity, and their personal freedom above life itself. Democrats are developmentally retarded individuals who gravitate to groups because they desperately need someone to take care of them and to tell them what to do and what to think. They have never attained the maturity to think for themselves or to take the risks necessary to achieve personal success on their own. The third type, aristocrats, are paranoid opportunists who imagine themselves to be eminently qualified to tell the rest of us how to live our lives, and who manipulate the naive democrats to enslave the republicans so that they can extract tribute (called taxes) from them to support their aristocratic life style.
In1688, William of Orange invaded England, overthrew James II, and replaced the aristocracy that had existed under him with a republic, underwritten by the English Bill of Rights of 1689. Within 88 years, by 1776, William and Mary’s republic had deteriorated to an aristocracy under James III. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and others revolted and formed a new republic, the United States of America, underwritten by a Constitution containing a Bill of Rights. In the 1910s, under Wilson, the American republic was adulterated with democracy, which has slowly but inexorably eroded the rights and freedom guaranteed by the Constitution of 1791.
Today, a hundred years later, we are entering the third stage of political decline. We have an imperial president, who views Americans not as his responsibility to defend and protect, but as his personal fiefdom, obligated to support him and his queen in the imperial manner they imagine they deserve. He is surrounded and supported by a vast army of Washington aristocrats, whose only interest is milking the peasants to augment their own power and monetary wealth. Whether these aristocrats call themselves Republicans or Democrats, they denigrate, defy, and suppress republicanism – and their only interest in democracy is to exploit it in order to enslave the real republicans. The only question is how long it will take the republicans to revolt, and whether we can do it peacefully.
This is a perilous time for America. Democracy has already adulterated our republic, and it is currently and actively being exploited not only by wannabe aristocrats but by a sitting president with imperial intentions. Can America break the mold and reverse our precipitous decent into totalitarianism?
The only thing that can stop our rush to aristocratic slavery is a republican resurgence! It is time for us to take the fight to the "enemies domestic," to rededicate ourselves to personal integrity and personal responsibility, and to never forget that the ultimate safeguard against imperialism is a coterie of well armed republicans who are willing to die to preserve the republic for which so Many others already have died.
