If I Want to build an even heavier wall on top of my doorway, I might observe that a column supports much more weight than a lintel of the same size, shape, and material. From that observation, I could then design an arch, with an angled keystone at the apex to direct the downward force into compressive stress on the stones of the arch – and I wold have a doorway that would support ten times the weight of a lintelled doorway.
If I want to sail my boat into the wind, I would observe that when I point my bow into the wind and set the sail to just billow out, the wind pulls the boat sideways. From that observation, I might design a boat with a keel on the bottom, so that the wind couldn’t pull it sideways through the water. Furthermore, if I set my bow just off wind, a component of the sideways force will be directed along the length of the keel, allowing me to sail almost directly into the wind.
The above are examples of using facts to solve problems. Facts are simply observations of the way reality works. The proof of a fact is the pragmatic criteria: "Does it work?" If it works, it’s a fact; if it doesn’t, it isn’t. And if it works, we can use it to solve problems.
I am continually amazed and often frustrated by people who seem unable to achieve that level of mentation. There are people who eschew facts in favor of wishful thinking. Rather than take the time and effort to achieve change through observation, learning, and application, they try to effect change by simply wishing it to be. These people seem to be incapable of even recognizing facts. They postulate undocumented opinions as facts, and they dismiss incontrovertible facts as "just your opinion."
Facts are not my or anyone else’s "opinion.". Facts exist outside my head – in reality. And they are not my facts, they are the universe’s. I only discover them and use them. But I cannot change them – nor can anyone.
The concept of facts is based on the assumption that reality is consistent. If the lintel broke once, it will break every time; if the compressive strength of one stone is greater than its sheer strength, the compressive strength of all stones is greater than their sheer strength; and if the wind pulls the boat sideways, it will always pull the boat sideways.
Wishful thinkers, though, respond, "This time we had the lintel blessed by Shaman Obama, and this time it will not break."
This attitude can lead to some bizarre activities. Wishful thinkers, for example, are intent on achieving integration of the white culture and the black culture in America. Even if that were a desirable accomplishment, it would be virtually impossible. From my observations when I was in high school, nerds and jocks segregated themselves from each other, girls and boys segregated themselves from each other, and blacks and whites segregated themselves from each other. I have further observed that the Irish naturally gravitate to Irish neighborhoods, Italians naturally gravitate to Italian neighborhoods, and blacks naturally gravitate to black neighborhoods. Self segregation is a natural fact, and no amount of wishful thinking will change that.
I am an engineer, and if I were asked to design a system to achieve integration of two diverse cultures, I would first ask myself, "What do I know." I know that the black community is plagued by joblessness, a propensity for looting, and the proliferation of illegitimate children – all signs of a severe lack of discipline.
I also know that discipline is a response to stress. We are not born with discipline; it is developed in us by the exigencies of our environment. You develop discipline in a soldier by marching him up and down the grinder in the hot sun and forcing him to run two miles with a full pack and weapon if he screws up. People like Steve Jobs and Doctor Ben Carson succeeded because of disciplines developed in their early lives.
The solution, therefore, is not to apply contra-factual methods like bussing and forced integration or anti-white methods such as affirmative action and quotas. The solution is not to bring the white community down to the level of the black community but to bring the black community up to the level of the white community by instilling discipline in black people.
Of course, that would require the dismantling of the Democrat voter plantation, so it ain’t gonna happen.
