Where did the BATF even get the authority to try such a backdoor approach to gun confiscation? Who the devil is BATF anyway?
In 2012, BATF had 4,770 employees and a budget of 1.5 billion dollars, thirty dollars a year for every tax-paying family of three in the United States. And what are we getting for that thirty bucks a year? Attempted infringement of our Constitutionally guaranteed rights!
Why does the Justice Department even have a federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms? Alcohol is not illegal in the United States. Tobacco is not illegal in the United States. And firearms are not illegal in the United States. In fact, the Constitution of the United States specifically prohibits any federal attempt to control the last commodity – or even to lay a federal tax on it. And the collection of any federal taxes that may be placed on the other two falls under the purview of the Internal Revenue Service, not the Department of Justice.
The BATF traces its roots back to the Office of the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue, founded in 1792 and charged with the task of collecting Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton's newly imposed tax on distilled spirits. The Revenue Office was a relatively minor branch of the Treasury Department until it was thrust into national prominence by the ratification of the 18th Amendment. This colossal mistake kept the Office, now known as the Bureau of Prohibition, and its burgeoning army of "revenuers" busy for the next thirteen years fighting the epidemic of lawlessness unleashed by the WCTU and Baptist Brigade crusade.
After prohibition was repealed in 1933, the Bureau of Prohibition was scaled down and renamed the Alcohol Tax Unit (ATU) of the Bureau of Internal Revenue. In 1950, the ATU was given the additional responsibility of enforcing tobacco tax laws. Johnson's Gun Control Act of 1968 placed responsibility for its enforcement in the ATU, which became known as the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) Division of the IRS. Then, in 2002, George Bush's Patriot Act established the DHS and transferred the ATF to the Department of Justice.
Thus was born the DHS Gestapo, morphed by the stroke of a presidential pen from a tax collection agency to a law enforcement agency. And thus did President 43 enable the domestic terrorism of President 44!
The DHS is A feckless and unnecessary agency and an unproductive drain on the national treasury. It, along with its ATF Gestapo, are only tempting vehicles for the President to use in illegally enacting dangerous and damaging "executive legislation" such as flooding the country with immigrant criminals and jihadists or restricting our access to ammunition. Both agencies should be disbanded, their buildings torn down, and salt sprinkled on the earth on which they stood.
And the legislations the ATF is charged with enforcing, the 1968 Gun Control Act and the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act should be repealed, as both of them are in direct violation of Article II of the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution.
