The Kurds are known for being a fiercely independent people and for being among the most persistent and irrepressible fighters in the world. The Kurdish peshmerga, a rag-tag, scimitar-in-their-teeth army effectively embedded in the Kurdish population, has been the only thing capable of stopping the Islamic State so far.
There are about 40 million Kurds living in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. Most Kurds identify themselves as Sunni Muslims, although Kurdish Islam is frequently diluted by other, more recent, religions like Yazidism and Zoroastrianism. A large number of Kurds, moreover, are secularists, who adhere to no religion.
The Islamic State traces its origin to Abu Musa’b al Zarqawi, the head of al Qaeda in Iraq from 2003 until his death in 2006. Al Zarqawi was an ardent practitioner of takfir, the excommunication and execution of fellow Muslims for riddah (apostasy) on the basis of minor excursions from the strict interpretation of the Koran.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State leader since May 2010, is a disciple of al Zarqawi, and believes that Islam must be purged of murtads (apostates) through takfir. Al Baghdadi adheres to a rigidly literal interpretation of the Koran as it was written in the seventh century during Islam's ascendancy over its enemies.
Al Baghdadi considers Shia Muslims, who comprise 20% of Islam and 65% of the population of Iraq to be murtads, who have strayed from the true word of Allah as revealed in the Koran. Most of the people being beheaded by his Islamic State soldiers in Iraq are fellow (Shiite) Muslims.
It is understandable that the Kurds would be alarmed at this situation. They are being threatened with either decapitation for apostasy or slavery as pagans, and they are fighting for their lives. But the Kurds have been fighting for their existence for the last 2,600 years, and they haven't lost yet.
One would think that, if the United States were truly interested in stopping the Islamic State in its genocidal frenzy, they would avail themselves of the services of a ready-made army of hardened, desperate, and determined fighters and arm them to the teeth. One would think.
The British Telegraph announced on Wednesday 2 July that efforts by Saudi Arabia and others to furnish the Kurds with heavy weapons are being blocked by the Obama misadministration. Why?
Why would Obama want to keep the Kurds from getting the weapons they need to protect themselves – and ultimately us – from genocidal maniacs?
Could it possibly be that Obama agrees with al Baghdadi that the Kurds are guilty of the crime of riddah and deserve to be exterminated?
Barack Obama is a Muslim, and as a Muslim he must abide by ummah. Ummah is the universal brotherhood of all Muslims. Ummah decrees that every Muslim must assist his Muslim brethren in whatever endeavors they may undertake – even if that endeavor is the execution of Muslim children for failure to fast during Ramadan!
In accordance with ummah, Barack Obama has been arming the Islamic State since – that we know of – at least Benghazi. And he is still arming them through the subterfuge of arming the Iraqi army knowing that the arms will be captured by Islamic State soldiers.
But the current situation in Iraq must be confusing to a Muslim. Obama's fecklessness in the face of the Islamic State threat is not entirely due to ineptitude. As a Muslim, he is confused as to how to treat an entity that is itself violating ummah by slaughtering fellow Muslims. 'Better to declare the Islamic State a "Junior Varsity team" and try to ignore it.
There is, however, one issue on which Obama, as a Muslim, can act decisively. The Kurds are murtads and must be eliminated.
